Law Society Webinar: Race for Inclusion: Room at the top for black women in law on 8 June

The legal profession is changing. Women solicitors now make up over half of the profession (52%). Women are still under-represented at senior levels though and for some women there is a combined ethnicity and gender penalty. One study found that whereas overall women were four times less likely than men to reach partner, black women were six times less likely and in the largest 50 law firms, there are only a handful of black women partners.

In this event the Law Society will discuss how we can shift the dial and increase the visibility and make room at the top for black women lawyers.

They will reflect on a year where we saw black inequality more widely discussed and consider to what extent these conversations have created change. The panel will consider the impact of current gender equality initiatives and how inclusive they are of different kinds of women. They will also provide practical takeaways on navigating a successful career pathway.

Adapt your support for working parents

Up to 87% (ONS) of parents in the UK are being asked to homeschool or manage childcare, as well as meeting work demands. The impact in terms of stress and wellbeing at the moment is visible – 1/4 women are considering quitting or downshifting their careers (McKinsey & Company) and some employers are missing the opportunity to support parents and avoid a costly loss of valuable team members.

This event aims to tell you exactly what you can be doing to support working parents now and in the future.

Zara Nanu at Gapsquare, Kristal McNamara, Gapsquare’s flexible working expert & Director of WorkWell Bristol and Ursula Tavender @flexpo & MUMBELIEVABLE LIMITED and Osborne Clarke’s Phillip Chivers will offer advice on creating a sustainable action plan to supporting parents in the workplace. They’ll be talking about:

  • The impact of lockdown and homeschooling on parents
  • Best practices to support working parents
  • How and why flexible working practices can help
  • Taking these learnings forward post-work from home
