Law Society Webinar: Race for Inclusion: Room at the top for black women in law on 8 June

The legal profession is changing. Women solicitors now make up over half of the profession (52%). Women are still under-represented at senior levels though and for some women there is a combined ethnicity and gender penalty. One study found that whereas overall women were four times less likely than men to reach partner, black women were six times less likely and in the largest 50 law firms, there are only a handful of black women partners.

In this event the Law Society will discuss how we can shift the dial and increase the visibility and make room at the top for black women lawyers.

They will reflect on a year where we saw black inequality more widely discussed and consider to what extent these conversations have created change. The panel will consider the impact of current gender equality initiatives and how inclusive they are of different kinds of women. They will also provide practical takeaways on navigating a successful career pathway.

Reignite your career, reignite your life: post lockdown career inspiration

We know that the pandemic has been tough on women’s careers, particularly for women with school age children. Yet, with any crisis comes opportunity. Remote and flexible working is here to stay, with many organisations embracing technology and new ways of working.

The Reignite Academy creates opportunities for lawyers to return to work after extended career breaks. During the last two years, they have helped many women return to careers in private practice and are now moving to in-house roles.

Stephanie Dillon & Lisa Unwin, two of the co- founders, will join us for an inspirational and advice- packed workshop for anyone ready to reignite their legal careers.

They will describe their experience of how the pandemic has opened up opportunities for women to return and will share tools, tips & techniques to help you get your career back on track. They are working with a number of firms in Bristol and Bath and will also talk about specific opportunities for
our area.

How are workplaces changing through COVID-19? Take part in a survey

How are workplaces and individuals’ experience of work changing as a result of COVID-19?

A team from the Institute for Employment Studies, the University of Southampton and Half the Sky are interested in how organisations and legal professionals are managing during lockdown, with funding from the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC).

They are particularly looking at:

  • remote working
  • communication
  • leadership
  • virtual teams
  • physical and mental health
  • productivity
  • future work patterns

Take the opportunity to take part in the research team’s survey and contribute to this research.

The findings are expected in late May and the team will be sharing the findings through a joint webinar with the Law Society.

Law Society: Practical toolkit for women in law

A new toolkit released by the Law Society to mark International Women’s Day on 8 March 2021 shows there is still much further to go to achieve gender equality for women lawyers globally and gives practical advice on how to set up new gender equality initiatives.

A survey of over 300 respondents across six continents, conducted by the Law Society of England and Wales and Bates Wells for the toolkit, found that women in the law still face significant barriers to progression – including unconscious bias, unequal pay, a lack of support when speaking out about instances of sexual harassment in the workplace and the ‘double burden’ women face when juggling caring responsibilities and work commitments.

You can read more and download a copy of the toolkit here.
